Creative Leadership in Action: Celebrating Black History Month at LDE UTC

Creative Leadership in Action: Our Learners Bring Black History to Life

This Black History Month, our Year 12 learners took the reins, writing, producing, and directing a live assembly for the lower school that reimagined how we celebrate legacy and progress.

Their concept? A game show-style performance where iconic Black public figures from the past and present tested their knowledge of each other’s achievements. It was a brilliant, student-led exploration of intergenerational impact, representation, and Black excellence.

From scriptwriting and set design to stage management, our upper school students handled every detail. They showcased not only creativity, but also leadership, teamwork, and a deep respect for history. We are proud to see our learners using performance to inspire, educate, and honour the contributions of Black changemakers across time.

Black History Month Spotlight: Stephen Levy – Filmmaker & Creative Mentor
As part of our celebrations, we welcomed Stephen Levy, a filmmaker, actor, and creative mentor, for a powerful session that blended storytelling, creative insight, and personal reflection.

Learners enjoyed a private screening of Stephen’s award-winning short film Epiphany, which sparked thoughtful discussion around identity, resilience, and creative self-expression. One memorable moment came when he asked everyone to repeat together:
“Success always comes when preparation meets opportunity.”
The session closed with an open Q&A where Stephen shared advice on navigating creative industries, building confidence, and staying open to opportunity. His passion for mentoring young creatives through the Renaissance Foundation reinforced his message of empowerment and inclusion.

Black History Month Spotlight: Annisha Taylor – Leading for Inclusion
We were also honoured to welcome Annisha Taylor, Head of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion at Ofcom, who shared her journey and reflections on inclusive leadership in the media and communications industry.
Annisha’s career includes leading diversity at the BBC and serving as a Trustee at The BRIT School. She continues to champion equitable representation through her role as an Honorary Fellow at the Institute for Equity, helping to shape inclusive culture at a national level.

From a young age, Annisha knew she wanted to uplift underrepresented voices — a passion that has guided her from the classroom to some of the most influential spaces in UK media. Her talk encouraged our students to think deeply about purpose, perseverance, and the importance of staying true to their values.
She closed with a message that resonated across the room:
“Remain resilient, stay focused, and you will get to where you want to be.”

Designing Legacy: A Learner’s Vision for BHM25
To mark Black History Month 2025, Mia Persson (Year 10) created a beautiful commemorative pin badge design that captures the spirit of unity, pride, and progress. Her design will be proudly worn by learners and staff throughout the month as a symbol of celebration and shared identity.

Badges are available in the foyer for anyone wishing to show their support and appreciation for the month’s events.

Reading for Reflection
Our library team and learners curated a special selection of books celebrating Black authors and stories, spanning fiction, biography, and history. The display was designed to spark conversation and reflection while encouraging everyone to explore new voices and perspectives.

Looking Ahead
Black History Month is always a time for celebration, learning, and reflection — but it is also a reminder of the creativity, resilience, and leadership that exist every day across our community.
We are proud of our learners, staff, and visiting professionals who came together to make this year’s celebrations so meaningful. Through their ideas, performances, and shared experiences, we continue to celebrate history, inspire change, and build belonging.

We’re proud of our learners and the impact they’re making.
