LDE UTC has launched a new aviation bursary programme that will create life-changing opportunities for learners interested in careers within the aviation and aerospace sectors.
Funded by the Sir Michael Bishop Foundation, the programme will provide £125,000 of support over five years, helping young people access experiences and opportunities that would otherwise be out of reach.
The bursary programme was officially launched on 2 June during the opening of the new Sir Michael Bishop Foundation Aviation Suite at LDE UTC. Located opposite London City Airport, the specialist facility provides learners with access to industry-standard equipment, including a professional flight simulator. The new programme has been designed to support learners throughout their aviation journey and will include:
- Membership of The Air League for all aviation learners
- Aviation-focused workshops and employer engagement opportunities
- Visits to RAF museums and industry partners
- Flying lesson bursaries for learners demonstrating exceptional progress, resilience and ambition
- The initiative reflects a shared commitment to developing the next generation of talent for an industry facing growing skills demands.
For learners at LDE UTC, the programme provides valuable exposure to the aviation sector while helping to build the knowledge, confidence and experience needed to progress into careers in aviation, aerospace and engineering. The bursary programme is particularly significant for young people in Newham, where many families face financial barriers to accessing specialist opportunities and experiences. By removing some of these barriers, the programme aims to widen participation and create new routes into high-skilled careers.
Speaking at the launch, Lord Glendonbrook said:
“It was a great pleasure to open the suite and to create this bursary for the many talented and ambitious students at London Design and Engineering UTC. The aviation sector needs a pipeline of young talent more than ever and this exceptional UTC is a huge asset to London City Airport and companies throughout the sector. I look forward to seeing how the bursary students thrive.”
Geoffrey Fowler, Principal and CEO of LDE UTC, said:
“This generous support from The Sir Michael Bishop Foundation will open doors for our students and create life-changing opportunities in aviation. The new bursary programme will inspire the next generation of pilots, engineers and industry leaders, while helping talented young people from all backgrounds achieve their ambitions. We are immensely grateful to Lord Glendonbrook for his belief in our students and the power of technical education.”
The launch builds on LDE UTC's established relationships with employers across the aviation sector and further strengthens opportunities for learners studying within one of the college's key specialisms. As the aviation industry continues to evolve, initiatives such as this bursary programme will help ensure that talented young people have access to the experiences, networks and support needed to pursue ambitious futures.
