Course Description

 A Level in English Language and Literature (EMC) is designed to develop learners’ ability to apply and integrate both linguistic and literary approaches to the study and creation of texts. The course aims to equip learners with analytical, evaluative, and productive skills through the exploration of a broad range of spoken and written texts, including prose, poetry, drama, and non-literary works from various historical periods.

Exploring Non-Fiction and Spoken Texts (Component 1):

Analysis of a diverse anthology of 20 spoken and written non-fiction texts from different time periods and contexts

The Language of Poetry and Plays (Component 2):

Study Blake: Songs of Innocence and Experience and Shakespeare: Othello, focusing on how language and style shape meaning and dramatic effect

Reading as a Writer, Writing as a Reader (Component 3):

Analyze Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald and create an original narrative writing, applying techniques learned from literary study

Analysing and Producing Texts (NEA - Component 4):

A coursework project including:

  • A comparative essay on one set non-fiction text and a second text of the your choice.
  • An original piece of non-fiction writing..

Assessment

  • Component 1 16% 1 hour written paper,
  • Component 2  32%, 2 hour written paper
  • Component 3  32%, 2 hour written paper
  • Component 4  NEA worth 20%
