Our Year 13 Business learners recently took part in an engaging session with Kerry Crane, Head of Recruitment at Transport for London (TfL), who manages a workforce of more than 6,000 people across the country.

Before joining TfL, Kerry worked in recruitment at John Lewis, bringing a wealth of experience from both corporate and public sector environments. During her visit, she shared valuable insight into how TfL approaches recruitment, giving learners a clear understanding of what employers look for during the hiring process. Kerry guided learners through the key elements of recruitment, from employment law and equality in hiring to practical advice on writing an effective CV and reading a person specification. She also highlighted how to identify potential bias or discrimination in job descriptions — knowledge that will help our learners navigate future applications with confidence and awareness.

The session connected directly to their business curriculum, making complex topics like employment legislation, HR strategy, and workforce planning feel relevant and real.
“The learners found the experience extremely useful,” said Sharian Joseph-Bertrand, Teacher of Business, Enterprise and Wellbeing Lead. “Kerry’s honesty and professionalism gave them a clear picture of what employers value and how they can present themselves successfully in future recruitment processes.”
This experience formed part of our IndEX Prepare (Skills) programme, one of four employer-led touchpoints that help learners build confidence, develop employability skills, and prepare for their future careers through mentoring, careers guidance, and professional workshops.
Every IndEX experience is designed to connect learning with industry.
If your organisation would like to deliver a masterclass, set a live project, or support our learners’ professional growth, we’d love to collaborate.
