Exploring the Role of Chemistry in Society

Our Year 10 scientists took part in an engaging online masterclass delivered by Alexander Riddell from Heriot-Watt University, focusing on the vital role chemistry plays in shaping modern society.

Heriot-Watt University is a world-renowned institution known for its strong focus on science, engineering, and innovation, with a long-standing reputation for producing industry-ready graduates in STEM fields.

During the session, learners deepened their understanding and confidence in Quantitative Chemistry, specifically in the area of reacting masses. This topic involves calculating the amounts of substances involved in chemical reactions, allowing chemists to predict yields, minimise waste, and design efficient industrial processes—essential skills in both laboratory and real-world applications.

Alongside guided calculations, learners also explored real-world technologies influenced by chemistry and discussed the links between chemistry and chemical engineering. A highlight of the session was the interactive Q&A, where Alexander shared insights into his career path and what it’s like to study science at university.
