In preparation for the AQA English Literature GCSE, our year 11 learners travelled to Alexandra Palace to watch Stephen Daldry’s award-winning National Theatre production of JB Priestley’s An Inspector Calls.
When Inspector Goole arrives unexpectedly at the prosperous Birling family home, their peaceful dinner party is shattered by his investigations into the death of a young woman. His startling revelations shake the very foundations of their lives and challenge us all to examine our consciences. More relevant now than ever, this is a must-see for a whole new generation.
As the text our learners are studying was written to be performed, it was integral that our learners got the opportunity to see the play come alive how it was intended. This gripping performance helped them to better grasp the impact of the text – to see the stage directions in action, experience the tone of the actor’s voice as they perform their lines and journey through the ups and downs of the dramatic three act plot.
Teacher of English Aminul shared, “Daldry’s production of An Inspector Calls illustrates the true essence of drama; the theatrical elements such as props and staging aid our learners to grasp the moral of modern texts. Our year 11s found the production beneficial as they were able to build on their knowledge through the theatrics.”
We are confident that experiencing this production in the theatre will add a further dimension to our learners' understanding and interpretation of this play.
"I really enjoyed the use of staging effects and props as it brought the play to life and helped me to remember key things about it. After watching An Inspector Calls in the theatre, I feel like I enjoy and understand the play even more," year 11 learner, Anthony.
