Year 10 Learners Master the Science of Concentrations

Year 10 science learners recently engaged in a virtual masterclass on the concentration of solutions, expertly delivered by Aline from PhenomX Health. This session aligned closely with the AQA GCSE science curriculum, particularly the Quantitative Chemistry section, which focuses on calculating concentrations and understanding their impact in chemical reactions.

PhenomX Health, known for its personalised nutrition and lifestyle apps, provided an excellent backdrop to this masterclass. Aline, using her expertise in science, demonstrated how the principles of concentration are crucial not only in academia but also across the health and wellness industry.

The masterclass objectives were clear:
Knowledge: Understanding that concentration can be measured in grams per cubic decimetre.
Understanding: Calculating the mass of solute in a known volume of solution.
Application: Relating the mass of the solute and the volume of a solution to its concentration.

Aline began the session by sharing her career journey and the relevance of scientific concepts in real-world applications like nutrition and healthcare. She then guided the learners through exercises to calculate concentration using standard formulas, enhancing both their analytical and problem-solving skills.

The learners also delved into practical aspects of solutions such as dilution and the process of increasing concentration by either adding more solute or evaporating water. The concepts of titrations and standard solutions were explored, underscoring their importance in accurately determining the concentrations of substances in solutions.

"Today’s masterclass not only reinforced critical aspects of our chemistry curriculum but also provided our learners with a glimpse into the practical applications of these concepts in the health sector," commented Babu, teacher of science.

We are thankful to Aline and PhenomX Health for providing such an informative masterclass.
