Exploring Cell Biology with Biomedical Scientist Maryam

Year 12 Biology learners experienced an enriching virtual masterclass on cell biology led by Maryam, a Specialised Biomedical Scientist at the Royal London Hospital. Part of Barts Health NHS Trust, the fourth largest in England, her role is pivotal in supporting the diagnosis and treatment of diseases across numerous hospital departments.

Maryam detailed her daily responsibilities and the diverse roles within her team, including those of anatomical pathology technicians and biomedical scientists, highlighting the essential laboratory and scientific tasks fundamental to medical practice. Her discussion extended to the crucial skills necessary for a biomedical scientist, such as analytical prowess, manual dexterity, and the ability to work under pressure, providing learners with a clear picture of the profession’s demands.

Furthermore, she shared her career journey and the personal fulfilment she finds in her field, encouraging students to pursue their passions in science. Maryam also connected her work to the COVID-19 pandemic, offering real-life insights into the biology curriculum, specifically units 2 and 4, which cover disease mechanisms and the effects of treatments.

Rayeeda, Head of Science, expressed gratitude for Maryam's continued involvement with the college: "Maryam’s contributions significantly enrich our learners' understanding of biology. Her passion and expertise not only illuminate the practical applications of cell biology but also inspire our students to appreciate the profound impact of their studies."

Concluding the masterclass, Maryam's advice and firsthand experiences provided invaluable guidance for our learners, reinforcing the importance of biology in real-world contexts.
