Exploring War Poetry with the National Army Museum.

Our GCSE English Literature learners had a masterclass from National Army Museum exploring the propaganda posters of World War I, aiming to help learners develop a greater understanding of the themes within our GCSE poetry cluster.

As our learners are studying war poems in the ‘Power and Conflict’ cluster of their GCSE anthology, this masterclass provided a deeper appreciation for the social and historical context in which these poems were written.

As understanding the context (AO3) is an assessment objective in the English Literature paper, our learners were eager to ask our virtual visitor lots of questions to add further depth and insight to their exam responses.

Thanks to this masterclass, our learners developed an appreciation of the role of propaganda in soldiers enlisting and the reality of the conditions they faced. This insight will no doubt lead to greater understanding of GCSE poems related to war.
