Thames Water Deliver Maths Masterclass

Our Year 11 learners delved into the practical application of the 'Volume of Cylinders,' a key topic in their GCSE curriculum.

Led by Kate from Thames Water, this masterclass provided a valuable industry perspective which showed the real-world use of this maths topic in industry settings. As a part of Kate’s working day, she must undertake tasks that require calculations such as volume and flow. She shared an example of where these calculations are needed by describing the need for long term planning to determine which sewage pipes may need replacing in the future. Calculations of volume and flow are needed here as Thames Water need to know if too much or too little sewage will be flowing through the pipes.

During this masterclass, learners worked with our visitor to complete various volume of a cylinder questions. They then moved onto calculating the flow rate, where Kate described the relationship between these two calculations. Through this masterclass, learners were able to properly contextualise a key maths topic whilst also working on worded maths problems that align with calculations Thames Water engineers have to work out in their working day.

“It can be motivating to know that engineers and other leading professionals are using the skills I am learning on the GCSE course in their jobs. It helps me to see the value in the work I am doing,” year 11 learner Nina.

Thanks to our sponsor Thames Water and to Kate for providing this valuable masterclass for our learners.
