Rebecca from Wellington Trust recently visited our Year 13 learners who had the incredible opportunity to participate in the Future Maritime Engineers programme.
This immersive experience introduced them to the exciting world of maritime engineering, a career path that many of them were not familiar with before this eye-opening residential trip.
Throughout the programme, our learners engaged in a variety of activities that allowed them to explore the possibilities within the field of maritime engineering. From hands-on experience with Warsash Maritime School’s ship simulator to insightful presentations and networking opportunities with maritime professionals, learners gained valuable insights and practical knowledge that broadened their horizons and expanded their career options.
Year 13 learner Fatima shared, ‘With Maritime Engineering, there’s so many different careers you can get into and with the Royal Navy you can get your degree paid for. There’s so many different opportunities and advantages to a career in Maritime Engineering that I didn’t know before this experience.’
The visit from Rebecca provided an opportunity for our learners to reconnect and discuss their progress and future aspirations beyond college, as well as reminisce about the experiences they shared during the residential trip.
Rebecca, Education Development Officer, shared: ‘It was a pleasure to return to LDEUTC to talk to the 2022 Future Maritime Engineers (FME) students. The Wellington Trust and our funders for FME, Royal Commission for the exhibition of 1851 were keen to find out if the project had had any lasting outcomes on the student’s careers. We were pleased to see that many had decided to follow the apprenticeship route into engineering, with some saying that the whole experience had had a direct influence on their future career choices. Our thanks to the LDEUTC staff and students involved, you helped to make the pilot project a success which means we are looking to offer it to other students in the future.’
We are immensely proud of our Year 13 learners for embracing this unique opportunity and grateful to Wellington Trust for their support in providing such enriching experiences. The Wellington Trust’s Future Maritime Engineers Project aims to expand horizons within the maritime engineering industry and we encourage young people, both from LDE and across the nation, to consider taking part in the Future Maritime Engineers programme to find out what this exciting industry has to offer.
‘It was an honour to be offered this wonderful opportunity to expose our learners to careers within a growing sector as a residential visit. As part of our continued commitment to ensure that our young people are aware of the vast array of future career paths, it is important that we raise awareness of different industries and pathways to give our learners information and options as they consider their next steps,’ Head of Careers, Janice.
