Our year 10 learners enjoyed a virtual visit from the University of Westminster to discuss choosing the right university course, receive advice on career pathways in different science practices (such as Human Nutrition, Pharmacology and Physiology) and also outline the skills needed to thrive in Higher Education.
Learners were introduced to the range of subjects within the science department at Westminster as well as the research projects different professors are in engaged in. They also heard about the experiences from various Alumni, and how they used their degree to get into the science industry.
Our visitors from the University of Westminster discussed the skills they would need, such as strong academic English, essay writing, reading aptitude, note taking, independence, research and presentation skills, exam technique and practical and social skills. They outlined the benefits of these skills and how learners could work towards developing them. Our learners were completely captivated as they were encouraged to be proactive in looking for work experience and pointed in the direction of some of the opportunities available, so they could have first-hand experience in a real science lab.
Learners were finally tasked with mapping their own journey through education, and thinking about the next steps they must take to achieve their short, mid and long-term goals. Our learners appreciate that visits such as these are vitally important to expose them to the wealth of opportunities available once they leave LDE UTC. With a clear idea of what they are striving for, learners will be sure to direct their efforts into investing into their future.
Thanks to University of Westminster for virtually visiting LDE UTC and inspiring the next generation of scientists!
