Our year 12 and 13 learners were treated to a visit from the Economist of The Bank of England, Gosia Goralczyk, who came to give a presentation on ‘Economics in Practice’.
They heard from Gosia about many topics, ranging from the function and mission of the Bank of England to the monitoring of financial stability.
‘That’s the one thing I love about economics,’ Gosia said enthusiastically, ‘these are not just charts, these are actually happening in the real world.’ Our guest speaker expressed great enthusiasm for her vocation which encouraged the learners to engage in productive discussions.
After the presentation, learners had the opportunity to ask questions where they discussed the diversity of job opportunities within economics as well as gaining invaluable knowledge about studying in higher education.
Year 13 learner Zulqarnayn described the presentation as ‘very important’ because it offered insight into the potential futures that economics can offer: ‘I’m not sure exactly what I want to do in the future, but I have selected subjects that complement each other well (maths, economics and physics). I am interested in private accounting, project management and lots of other things. Talks like these are important so I can see what routes I can take to get these kinds of jobs.’
Their teacher, Head of Maths Andrea Peiris, explained that through the challenging topics tackled by Gosia, learners explored various ways that economics is at work in real life whilst also gaining insight into the day-to-day life of an economist.
