Course Description
The Pearson Edexcel GCE A Level in Further Mathematics is a comprehensive two-year course designed to deepen students' mathematical understanding and skills. The course is divided into four externally-examined papers:
Paper 1 & 2 - Core Mathematics - These papers cover advanced topics in algebra, calculus, geometry, and complex numbers, providing a solid foundation in higher-level mathematics.
Paper 3 & 4 - Applied Mathematics - all learners will study Further Mechanics 1, focusing on the principles of mechanics, and Decision Mathematics 1, which involves algorithms, network analysis, and linear programming.
Career Pathways
Mathematics is a key component of many jobs and degree courses, from genetics and geography to economics, finance, accounting and computing. Recent research suggests that people with A Level Mathematics can earn 10% more than colleagues with similar qualifications. LDE UTC learners have gone to a wide range of UK universities to study this subject.
Job Opportunities
People with maths degrees and other qualifications can go into: accounting, medicine, engineering, forensic pathology, finance, business, consultancy, teaching, IT, games development, scientific research, programming, the civil service, design, construction and astrophysics to name a few. Specific job roles include actuary, business analyst, software engineer, technology analyst, information engineer, speech technology researcher, and maths teacher.
Jobs in the mathematical sciences - that is, careers that studying maths at university prepares you for directly - tend to be very well paid. The combination of a skills shortage and a growing need for maths skills means more and more employers are on the look out for maths graduates.
Only 7 in 100 maths graduates are unemployed 6 months after graduating.
